FitOne Raises $75,000 for St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital

2016 proceeds will help promote healthy lifestyles for our communities’ kids

BOISE – October 20, 2016 – St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital received $75,000 from the FitOne 5K, 10K and Half Marathon today thanks to the nearly 10,000 people who participated in this year’s run/walk event on September 24th.

“Health begins in our communities, and it’s imperative that it starts with our children,” said St. Luke’s Nampa Administrator, Ed Castledine who accepted the donation on behalf of St. Luke’s.

Idaho’s statistics closely mirror national childhood obesity rates, with one in three children overweight or obese. These children have an increased risk for developing cardiovascular disease, hypertension, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, joint dysfunction and more.

“We are so grateful that the contributions made possible by the FitOne sponsors and participants have allowed us to promote healthy lifestyles for our community kids,” Castledine said. “These funds have contributed to nine elementary schools receiving walking tracks, others receiving much needed physical education equipment, inclusionary play opportunities for children with special needs and partnerships for activity-based after school programming.”

Funds from 2016 will support similar projects in some of Idaho’s more rural communities. The funds allow St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital to support programs that are safe, structured and sustainable, explained Castledine.

“Without the FitOne funding, we would never have the ability to go out and partner in a meaningful way in these environments,” Castledine said. “And it is due to all those steps people take in FitOne. They are making this happen.”

In 2016, FitOne also introduced the Group Volunteer Gift Program (GVGP), a new initiative created to encourage smaller local nonprofits to play a larger role in FitOne’s weekend of events, while offering an alternative way for these often-overlooked organizations to raise funds. Through the GVGP,
St. Luke’s Health System donated $13,000 to 11 eligible volunteer groups.

One-third of the total 2016 donation will be dedicated to the new St. Luke’s Children’s Pavilion now in the beginning phase of construction. The Pavilion will bring together more pediatric specialists and services under one roof. The goal is to increase clinical efficiency and collaboration, and improve the health of our youngest, most fragile patients who often have to travel from office to office for their treatment and care. The new outpatient health care center will also allow St. Luke’s to provide more age-appropriate therapies to help children better cope with their illness in a positive and fun environment that reminds them they are still kids.
